How to Hold Crypto in an IRA: Crypto IRA vs Bitcoin ETF, Fees and IRS Rules

To hold crypto in an IRA, open an IRA with a provider that buys and keeps the coins for the account, fund it with cash, then buy inside it. The other route is a spot bitcoin ETF bought in an ordinary IRA, which charged 0.25% a year at IBIT and FBTC on 7 Nov 2026.

To hold crypto in an IRA, open an IRA with a provider that buys and keeps the coins for the account, fund it with cash, and place the buy order inside the account. The coins belong to the IRA, not to you, so they stay with the provider until you take a distribution.

There is a second route that many people never compare: a spot bitcoin ETF bought inside an ordinary IRA at a regular broker. Which one costs less depends almost entirely on one number, how long you hold, and the break-even on the fee schedules published today is about eight years.

Route Who holds the bitcoin Fee read 7 Nov 2026 Cost on $10,000 held 5 years, flat price
Crypto IRA (iTrustCapital, Fidelity Crypto IRA) The provider’s custodian, in the IRA’s name 1% on each buy and each sell $199.00
Spot bitcoin ETF in a normal IRA (IBIT, FBTC) The fund’s custodian; the IRA owns fund shares 0.25% a year, taken inside the fund $124.38

Providers are named only as examples of published fee schedules, not as a recommendation. Fees change; check the live schedule before you open anything.

Before you start

Cash to contribute or an IRA balance to move, because coins you already own cannot go in. IRS Publication 590-A says contributions “must be in the form of money” and that property can’t be contributed. Selling your own coins to the IRA does not get around it: selling property to your IRA is one of the IRS’s own examples of a prohibited transaction.

A decision on Roth or traditional treatment. Inside either one, trades do not create a tax bill each year. The difference is when tax is paid, which the Roth IRA and traditional IRA pages explain, so it is not repeated here.

The provider’s full fee schedule, read before you open anything. Trade fees, any monthly or annual account fee, and what it costs to move the account out later.

The steps

1. Decide between coins in a crypto IRA and an ETF in a normal IRA

If you want only bitcoin and plan to hold for years, price both. If you want coins that have no US spot ETF, only the crypto IRA route reaches them.

2. Write down every fee on the provider’s schedule

Trade fee on buys, trade fee on sells, account fee, and closing or transfer fee, with the date you read them.

3. Open the IRA and pick Roth or traditional

The account type is chosen at opening. The provider’s IRA application asks for it.

4. Fund it with cash, a direct transfer or a rollover

A new contribution counts against the 2026 limit of $7,500, or $8,600 at 50 or older, across all your IRAs. Moving an old 401(k) does not count against it; the IRA rollover page covers the safer direct method.

5. Buy inside the account

Place the order from the IRA itself, never from a personal exchange account, and check that the confirmation shows the IRA as the owner.

6. Keep every personal coin and wallet separate

Never lend to the account, borrow from it, pledge it for a loan, or trade coins between it and yourself or family.

7. Recheck the fee schedule once a year

Write the new numbers next to the old ones. If a monthly fee appears, rerun the table below.

A worked example

Take $10,000 of bitcoin and an unchanged price. A 1% buy fee and a 1% sell fee leave $10,000 x 0.99 x 0.99 = $9,801, a cost of $199.00 however long you hold. A 0.25% annual fund fee leaves $10,000 x 0.9975 to the power of the years held.

Years held ETF at 0.25% a year Crypto IRA, 1% buy + 1% sell Cheaper
1 $25.00 $199.00 ETF
3 $74.81 $199.00 ETF
5 $124.38 $199.00 ETF
8 $198.26 $199.00 ETF, by 74 cents
10 $247.21 $199.00 crypto IRA
15 $368.51 $199.00 crypto IRA
20 $488.30 $199.00 crypto IRA

The lines cross at 8.0 years. Because both fees are percentages, the crossing point does not move if bitcoin rises or falls; only the dollar amounts scale.

Fee cost on $10,000 with the price held flat, computed from the published rates: 0.25% a year against one 1% buy and one 1% sell, crossing at 8.0 years. Source: fee rates on the iShares, Fidelity and iTrustCapital pages, read 7 Nov 2026 (m112-crypto-ira-fee-drag-10000.csv).

That flat line assumes one buy and one sell. Every extra round trip of the whole balance costs another 1.99%, so a crypto IRA that is rebalanced or traded loses its long-hold edge fast.

Monthly buying changes the answer too. Put in $625 a month, the 2026 limit divided by 12, for 10 years at a flat price, then sell. The 1% account pays $750 on the 120 buys and $742.50 on the final sale, $1,492.50 in all. The 0.25% fund takes $937.55 over the same decade, because most of the money sat in it for only part of the time.

A flat annual fee works differently again. IRA Financial lists a $100 flat annual fee plus trading fees for its crypto platform. On $10,000 that is 1% a year; on $100,000 it is 0.1%. The table assumes $0 ETF commissions and ignores the fund’s bid-ask spread, so check your own broker’s commission line.

The original data

From 17 Sep 2014 to 6 Nov 2026 Yahoo Finance shows 4,434 daily bitcoin closes. Measured from the highest close so far, bitcoin fell more than 50% four times since 2017:

Peak close Low close Fall
$19,497.40 on 16 Dec 2017 $3,236.76 on 15 Dec 2018 83.4%
$63,503.46 on 13 Apr 2021 $29,807.35 on 20 Jul 2021 53.1%
$67,566.83 on 8 Nov 2021 $15,787.28 on 21 Nov 2022 76.6%
$124,752.53 on 6 Oct 2025 $58,558.86 on 30 Jun 2026 53.1%

The last close in the file, $75,746.93 on 6 Nov 2026, sits 39.3% below the October 2025 peak. Over the five years to that date the daily moves annualize to 50.9% volatility (standard deviation of 1,826 daily log returns, scaled by the square root of 365 because bitcoin trades every day), and 125 days moved 5% or more. The full series is in the bitcoin drawdown CSV.

Why this matters more inside an IRA than outside one. An 83% fall in a taxable account can be refilled with any amount of new money. Inside an IRA the refill is capped at the yearly contribution limit, so a $50,000 crypto IRA that loses 76.6%, as bitcoin did from November 2021, has $11,683 left, and rebuilding it with new money takes years of maximum contributions. The crypto allocation page covers how much of a portfolio to size this way.

The IRS rules that apply inside the account

Crypto is property for federal tax purposes. IRS Notice 2014-21 says virtual currency “is treated as property” and that general property-transaction rules apply. Outside an IRA that makes every sale a taxable event. Inside one, sales and swaps are not reported each year; tax follows the IRA’s own rules on withdrawal.

Prohibited transactions end the IRA. The IRS lists borrowing money from the IRA, selling property to it and using it as security for a loan as examples, and names the owner’s fiduciary and family (spouse, ancestors, lineal descendants and their spouses) as disqualified persons. If the owner engages in one, the account stops being an IRA as of the first day of that year and is treated as distributed at fair market value.

Section 4975 of the tax code adds a 15% first-tier tax and a 100% second-tier tax on other disqualified persons who take part, the second only if the transaction is not corrected.

The contribution limit is shared. For 2026 the total you put into all traditional and Roth IRAs together can’t exceed $7,500 ($8,600 at 50 or older), or your taxable compensation if that is less.

What happened to the Alto CryptoIRA

Alto sold its CryptoIRA business to the investing app Public, announced on 13 Nov 2025. Alto’s own release says it would stay on as custodian, customers would keep trading on Alto’s platform at first, and the accounts would move onto Public’s platform in early 2026.

Anyone searching for the Alto crypto IRA today is looking at an account that now sits under a different front end, so read the fee schedule on the platform you actually log in to rather than an older review.

How to tell it worked

Check three things within 30 days of the first purchase. The statement names the IRA, not you, as the owner of the coins or fund shares. The fees charged match the schedule you wrote down in step 2, to the cent on at least one trade. And your total 2026 contributions across every IRA are at or under $7,500 ($8,600 at 50 or older).

When it fails

The most expensive failure is a prohibited transaction. Selling your own coins to the account, or lending the account money, does not just cost a fee: it can end the IRA for the whole year and make the full balance taxable.

The second is paying 1% on every purchase without noticing. The monthly example above costs $1,492.50 against $937.55, and frequent trading widens that gap by 1.99% a round trip.

The third is a provider changing hands or fees. The Alto sale shows that the platform you open with is not always the one you finish with; a fee schedule read once and never again goes out of date.

A fourth is forgetting the volatility. Four falls of more than 50% since 2017 is the record, and the contribution limit caps how fast the account can be refilled.

Questions people ask

Can I hold crypto in a Roth IRA?

Yes. A crypto IRA can be opened as a Roth, and a spot bitcoin ETF can be bought in any Roth IRA at a broker that offers it. The Roth tax rules apply to the account, whatever it holds.

Can I transfer bitcoin I already own into my IRA?

No. Contributions must be money, and selling your coins to the IRA is a prohibited transaction. You can sell them in a taxable account, pay any tax due, and contribute cash up to the limit.

Is a crypto IRA cheaper than a bitcoin ETF?

On the fee schedules read on 7 Nov 2026, a single buy and sell at 1% each costs less than a 0.25% fund only when the hold passes 8.0 years, and only without extra trades or monthly buys.

Do I pay tax when I trade crypto inside an IRA?

Not each year. Notice 2014-21 property treatment matters for coins outside the account; inside it, tax is settled under the IRA’s rules when money comes out.

Spot bitcoin ETFs explains the fund route and what the SEC approved in January 2024. The Roth IRA and traditional IRA pages cover the two tax treatments either route sits inside. And IRA rollovers is where to start if the money for this account is coming from an old workplace plan.
